HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

So the holidays went by WAY too fast for me. Going back to the east gets harder each time. It was great to see Gordon's clan (however brief) and, as always, wishing I could be with everyone at once. I love this family. I was able to meet my newest grandchild, Elliott John. He's MUCH cuter than his pictures and such a sweet baby. He is named after the singer Elliott Smith and his two grandfathers (both Jon/John). Funny story - Elliott was given his 'name & blessing' at home with about 50+ people present. Jacob was very nervous and when he began the blessing the name he gave was "Elliott John Smith (pause - whisper by dad John 'Ashley') Ashley". Needless to say his sisters, wife and friends couldn't stop snickering. But all and all it was a very sweet blessing. Other exciting Christmas news was that Chelsea and Brad are PREGNANT! Emma will become a big sister some time in July. John bought me a web cam for Christmas so we are hoping to connect to all the kids. Could this be what's next for the Risser Clan???
Here's to a exciting and adventurous NEW YEAR!

Merry Christmas to All...

Hoping to stimulate some posts on family blogs from other weary eyed Santa's helpers, I'm going to post myself with more to come later when I have a bit more time.  Two are from our Christmas Eve celebration at Jeff and Michele.  As usual, it was a fun evening full of love and Christmas spirit.  The third is from April and Don's celebration.  I'll let them (ahem.... Aimee) tell you about it in more detail on their blog but the Santa is Gordon and I think you all know the festive little elf.

A California Christmas

This was the sight at Jeff and Michelle's house today- just another sunny day in paradise... NOT!  A California White Christmas.

Will the real brunette...

...please stand up?  Toni?  Apparently April and I have decided to join the brunette ranks.  As April says, "Can't afford a facelift".  Here's my new look.  April needs to post her own update.  Aimee?  Can you help?   When you don't have kids, the biggest news you can give regards haircolor.  This is what I've been reduced to... help me.

You Better Not Cry... You Better Not Pout...

The Chicago Tribune featured photos of children scared or crying while sitting on Santa's lap. Here's some of my favorite.

Return of the Navbar

For the life of me I could not figure out how the Navbar (the Blogger bar on the top of the blog) was hidden because I could not find the code anywhere. Oh well, I think this Christmas theme is a cute one and I was able to return the Navbar to the top so it's easier to create a new post. Sorry for the time it took to get it fixed.

Eddie

FYI...

Sara and Jacob have posted more picture of Elliott on their blog.  Be sure to check it out.  He's a keeper!

WELCOME GRANDBABY #51 (I think?)

Elliot John Ashley has arrived! Weighing in at 7 lbs., 6 ozs., 18 inches and a full head of hair. I'm not sure of the exact time, but it was around 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Utah time. Overall mother and baby are doing well. Elliot has had to make a trip to the NICU for a while due to the fact that his lungs are slightly immature and he needs a little help with the breathin process, but Jacob says the doctors are not concerned and that he should be fine by morning. I'm sure more details will follow. Jacob is one happy pappy!!!

2008 Dia de los Muertos

This year Mom, Jeff and Devon (wearing a stylin' hat), Sydney and Logan joined me to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)  at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.  We started at my house and made our own alter honoring our loved ones and friends that have passed on.  I explained the alters, the holiday traditions and what to expect so hopefully they wouldn't be afraid of anything they saw and to understand that this is intended to be a joyous celebration.  Oh, and we ate minicupcakes to celebrated Jeff's birthday.
Photograph were difficult to take.  It was pitch black so you never really quite knew if you had anything framed well and it was crowded!  Almost impossible to get pictures without strangers standing in them.
This was one of the performance stages set over a lake.  It was really beautiful.  On the side of the building they were projecting colored light patterns that looked like the paper cutouts that they use on the alters to represent wind.  At the end of this post I've added a video of a performance at this stage to give a little  sense of scale.
This is one of two 15-20 foot skeletons that stand guard over the door to the mausoleum.

I love this picture.  It's one of two skeletons that are sitting in boats on the lake.  On the right are groups of candles that also are floating along but in this picture they've already burnt out.  When lit they add a beautiful effect.

More papermache figures, however Logan, Devon and Sydney are very real.  Below is a video of some of the dance performances.

Calacas Attire

I

You're encouraged to come in Calacas (skeleton) attire.  We all agreed that next year (always next year) we want to participate in the calacas.  The picture above is of one of the dancers.  I loved the shot I ended up getting for several reasons but the biggest being that it's so dark and there are so many people that I just blindly held my camera up and shot.  This was one where I actually liked what I got.

These ladies looked amazing and I'm not sure the pictures do them justice.  This is the view from behind and in front.

The Alters

These pictures are a little misleading.  It's totally dark out there.  Most times you're not even sure if you have the picture framed correctly if at all.  So this is Jeff, Mom, me, Logan, Sydney and Devon at the cemetery.  When it was all over I asked Devon what she thought of it and if she'd come again.  Her response?  "Maybe next year in the daytime"... we'll see next year now, won't we?

This One's for Jeremy and Kristy

This is the alter for Johnny Ramone who (obviously) is buried here.

I liked this picture because the lighting made it look like this skeleton royalty is holding this man's head.

They try to discourage Halloween attire in an effort to try to separate these two holidays but it's really inevitable that Halloween will creep in, especially when it's just the night before.  I thought this was cute so I included it.

Me, a Nazi?

I sent this to Letters to the Editor at the Signal after this happened last night.

I am pro Proposition 8. I believe very strongly that marriage is a time-honored and socially critical covenant between a man and a woman with the chief purpose of conceiving and raising children in a loving family environment, a covenant that has been gradually eroded and made to seem wholly irrelevant (till now) over the last 40+ years. I live on a busy street in my tract and have had 4 signs stolen from my front yard in 2 weeks. Many of my friends have had theirs stolen too. One house in my otherwise peaceful neighborhood was vandalized. I came home late this evening to surprise a young man posting a swastika and a lengthy accusation on the streetlight in front of my house accusing “Yes On 8” people of being hate-filled Nazi's. Being of German descent I guess I should have been outraged at this, but I spoke cordially with him for a while to let him explain his beliefs and figure out why he picked my house. He eventually admitted it was because of the “Yes On 8” sign on my lawn and he wanted to make a statement specifically towards me. If he had painted the very same message on my garage door it would have been a hate crime. I'm very concerned. This has become a common response by Prop 8 opponents. Slander and hate-filled accusations from the same group that tells us we should be more open-minded and accepting of those different from us. This is scary moral relativism in a most unsubtle form. Apparently in their minds any means seems to justify the ends, including vulgarity, slander and intimidation. Perhaps naively I left his paper alone hoping the contrasting displays may move those still thinking about it to carefully consider the means and methods of Proposition 8 opponents and where such justification could take us in the future.

Thank Heaven...

...for little girls. Another little girl has joined the family! Amanda and Brandon welcomed their new baby girl today. She was born at 6:10 p.m. and weighed in at 6 lbs 5 oz.; 18 inches long. Grandma Toni (this makes 16 grandchildren) said she has a beautiful head of dark hair and that it was an easy delivery for Amanda (for once:-) Oh, and as of now- no name. Somewhat of a Fairbanks tradition to take the baby home without a name. Stay tuned. Next up (Ithink in order of appearance): Sara/Jacob, Kristy/Jeremy, Jenni/Daniel, Eddie/Carline, Jason/Sarah. Did I forget anyone?

Mission Accomplished!

Yes, last Saturday was my 3rd and final triathlon of the season.  The previous Sunday I competed in my second tri in Hermosa Beach.   My goal was to podium in one and maybe 2 of my triathlons.  I'm very happy to report that I placed 3rd in Hermosa (missed 2nd by 14 seconds) and (drumroll please) 2nd in the Pumpkinman- Las Vegas Triathlon.  Actually it was in Boulder City.  We swam in Lake Mead- what a switch from the ocean.  No significant swells and I could see the bottom! For awhile I forgot I was in a race as I became fascinated with the lake floor with all it's rocks and other stuff on the bottom.

The Friday night before the race, Carrie, my best friend from BYU (Hawaii and Provo) drove up from Las Vegas to have dinner with me.   I've never met someone with a quicker wit and sharper sense of humor than her.  She kept me entertained and my mind off the race.
After dinner she took me to this park where wild big horn sheep come down from the mountains at sunset and graze in the park.

I Want My Own Sign...

Sunday morning I went to meet my best friend from high school for breakfast.  She's living in Henderson, Nevada.  As I drove through her complex I saw this sign and I think we all know who I immediately thought of!  I hear Jason has his own street sign as well.

Happy Halloween

Hope you enjoy the new theme. I'm not sure if I missed some links to family or friends so let me know if you have been forgotten and I will add you.

Creepy

Since Halloween is coming up, I'll make the first creepy post.

Pride Cometh Before....

Last Saturday I went riding up Soledad Canyon Road towards Acton on my weekly bike ride. I was feeling pretty good. I had my heart monitor on and could see that my heart rate was low and that I was recovering quickly after each hill climb. I was coming back and as I started up the climb from Agua Dulce Canyon Rd to the Soledad tunnel I could see two riders ahead of me about half way up, and I could tell I was gaining on them. "Wow" I thought. "I really have improved." I didn't quite catch them before the tunnel and they went pretty fast on the downhill side, so I didn't catch them till the top of the next hill. When I did I kind of blew by them and thought smugly that they must be admiring how quick this old man is. I shot down the next hill, under the freeway at Shadow Pines and blew down the road subconsciously thinking to myself that they were dropping behind quickly and admiring my speed, if they could even see me.

I topped the next hill in good time and crossed Sand Canyon road when all of a sudden there they were, passing me. "Well," I thought, "I gave them a good pull and now I'll draft them.". But now I was having a little trouble keeping up with them. I pushed hard and stayed about 10 yards behind (drafting actually really makes me really nervous) as we crossed over the road by Anna Frieda and went under the freeway to the bike path. I passed them again as we went through the gate and noticed that one of them seemed to have a black knee-high stocking on his left leg only. "Kind of weird" I thought. (Regular bike riders only wear the short ankle-high socks and knee-highs are a dead give-away the rider is a novice) but this sock was only on one leg.

After about a half mile they passed me again and I looked closer and realized he had a carbon fiber prosthetic calf. Well, that was kind of humbling. This guy had half a left leg and he was pushing me. Now as I was riding behind him I saw he was sitting over to the right of his saddle and was moving kind of strange as he peddled. I looked closer and this time I realized that his left thigh was only about as big as my arm!! I had to laugh at myself for being such a big schmuck. (That's Yiddish kids, not a swear word.)The only reason I could catch him on the hill is because he was peddling with only one leg. That was REALLY humbling! Pride really does come before the fall.

Baby Boom!

Well, the Risser Family seems to be exploding- so many pregnancies and new ones just arrived.   With that in mind, I thought I'd share an interesting piece I've been listening to on This American Life.  It's one of my favorite radio programs and I was very happy when I realized that I could stream the programs on my computer.  The show available this week is titled Going Big and has to do with Baby College- a program for early intervention for children in developing life skills.  The program was based on research showing that one of the biggest factors effecting a child's success in school and life in general was language!  The amount of words children were exposed to from age 0-3 years.   Not just any words, but positive words were even more productive.   These children seem to do better with cognitive skills  and non-cognitive (life coping skills) despite socioeconomic backgrounds.  If these skills were not achieved by kindergarten,  they were very difficult to learn later on.

Because the full program is about an hour long, I usually play the programs on my computer while I'm cleaning, cooking, etc.  The part of the show on Baby College is the first 20 minutes so you could just listen to that if pressed for time.  To take a listen, go to the website:  thisamericanlife.org and then search Going Big (this week the episode will come up on the home page but will it will change on Sunday 10/05).
If you want to listen to a crazy, funny but true comedy of errors story (unrelated to Baby College)  search the site for Squirrel Cop and listen to a story of "what could go wrong, did go wrong".  One of my favorites.

Spewing Chunks

Cherryl, Kyle and I went to Utah the weekend of September 7th to See Eddie, Carline and Matix, and to be with GK and Suzanna to help bless little Van. I have a bunch of pictures but I left my USB connector at Eddie and Carline's so I have to wait for it to arrive by mail before I can download and show them off, but in the meantime we had an experience that I have to tell you all about.

Suzanna's family was having the wedding reception for her sister at their cabin up in Little Cottonwood Canyon (calling it a cabin is a little like calling a pavilion a tent; it's a real mountain getaway.)and Kyle and I went up to deliver some decorative lights. We had the dog with us and I was a little nervous about that because every time I have taken him in my car he throws up. Never once with Cherryl, only with me. She took him to Yosemite; 5 hours in the truck in and out of the canyons, up and down hills, never once. All the way to Utah, 11 hours and not even a hick-up. I take him down the street and he leaves a gift on the front seat. I should have named him Barfolomew.

Anyway, we're heading up 90th South into the lower bench. We had gotten some drinks when we left Eddies and I had just finished chewing my ice and put the cup in the holder between me and Kyle in the front seat when Woody comes up on the center console and sticks his nose in my cup, like he's looking for something to drink. I hear a small coughing noise and Kyle say, "He just threw up in your cup!". Sure enough, there it was. We both nervously laughed and commented on what a close thing that was and how lucky we were to have a cup, and that he used it. We pulled into a Walgreen's and I threw the cup in the trash can, and we went on our way confident
that we had dodged the bullet.

About a mile up the road we're now into the last houses and still about 2-3 miles from the cabin when Woody comes up and gets into Kyle's lap and sticks his head out the window, then pulls it back in and starts licking his nose and lips and salivating. Kyles says, "I think he's getting sick again!". I yell, "STICK HIS HEAD OUT THE WINDOW!!!. Kyle just barely gets him to the door when he lets loose with a bucket load. Kyle looks out the window and say "It's all over the side of the truck!" I had no idea till we got to the cabin and by that time it was dry as a bone and glued on tight. It was all over everything from the rear corner of the window to the end of the bed. I mean he must have stored up everything he had eaten for the last three days for this stunt.

Before I take him anywhere with me again I'm going to have to invent some kind of plastic bag that goes over his head, that will let him breath, but traps him in his own gift when he bless me with his last dinner.

Next blog I'll tell how Matix tried to take up rock climbing when we went with Uncle GK.

In Honor of... 9/11

Friday, September 12, I had to drive up to Malibu to pick-up my race packet.  As I approached Pepperdine University I came across this incredible sight.  Thousands of flags on that expansive grassy hillside- 2,997 of them to be exact; one for each victim of 9/11.  It was an amazing sight.  The night before I watched some of the shows commemorating the event on the History Channel.  I came across them while channel surfing... the film was an open mic but no one was talking.  NYC has never been so silent.  There were people walking around but no one said a word.  And I was plunged back into that feeling I had after the attacks and unable to pull myself away from the vision on the screen.

For those of you who don't know, I was in NYC 5 days before the attacks.  A friend called me at work on Friday and offered me his frequent flyer miles to come to the east coast for the weekend.  I've never done anything quite that impulsive but took him up on his offer.  I was on the red-eye that night.
It was the most beautiful weekend: postcard weather with clear blue skies.  We visited some friends on Long Island.   My hosts took me on their boat and we cruised around Manhattan.  I feel honored to have been able to see the Towers one last time.  My friend and I stayed much to late to make the trek back to Connecticut so we stayed on Long Island at our hosts beautiful home.   The next day instead of racing back to CN to retrieve my luggage then to JFK to catch my return flight, my friend convinced me to go into the city to play instead. He promised to Fed Ex my things to me overnight.  I agreed and we spent a fabulous day in the city afterwich he took me to the airport and I boarded without any luggage and only the clothes I was wearing.  That would be viewed as very suspect post-9/11.  But again, I was so grateful to have had one more moment in NYC that was so carefree and exciting.  Not to mention that I could leave my shoes on before boarding the plane!
The morning of 9/11 I was getting ready for work when the radio program broke with a news bulletin that a plane had reportedly hit one of the towers.  I immediately knew it wasn't an accident because of all the flight restrictions.  I turned on the TV and was watching live when the second plane hit.  I think we all share the mutual story of being glued to the TV/radio while the country's collective heart was broken.
About 6 weeks after the attack, Mom and I went to NYC and visited the site.  They were still keeping people several blocks away but you could still see enough to break your heart.  And again, the silence.  No one spoke.  I'll never forget that feeling.

J-Lo SmayLo... I made the Podium!

Yes, this past Sunday was the celebrity infested Malibu Triathlon. You always knew where Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez were based on the flashbulbs of the paparazzi. Yes, there were bets as to whether Matt would bike shirtless or not. He opted for a shirt. The Malibu Triathlon is considered a sprint tri. The distances are: 1/2 mile swim, 18 mile bike on PCH and 4 mile run... in that order.
I decided late in the season to push myself to see what I could accomplish. My goal was to try to podium in at least one of my 3 scheduled Tri's (Hermosa and Pumpkinman Las Vegas Club Nationals are next month). A month and a half ago I hired a coach to help train me. He creates training schedules for me and we phone conference once a week. I knew I was taking on a very lofty goal given the time frame but I figured I could repeat my performance from last years Hermosa and perhaps improve on it.

Last week I noticed that my attitude had gone a little south and I was dreading my workouts, even though my numbers were clearly improving. I realized I had put a wee too much pressure on myself, was pushing harder than my coach had even recommended. I was starting to dislike my workouts because none of them were fun anymore- they all hurt! I don't mean "hurt" as in injuring myself, but as in pushing my physical limits- every time. Time to back off and return the joy!
I decided to let that goal go, do the best I could while enjoying the process. My new goal: beat Jennifer Lopez's time! How lofty is that? I mean come on... ya gotta have some kind of incentive. Who cares that she just gave birth to twins 5 months ago. She has LOTS of leisure time and Gunner Peterson training her (lest you all think that I believe mom's just sit around with nothing to do, let's remember ... it's J-Lo... nannies, cooks, chauffers and personal assistants... she's got time!). Besides, she's about 15 years (give or take a few) younger than me.

I had to get up at 3:15 a.m in order to be in Zuma when the parking opened. It's limited and they advise an early arrival. When I was setting up I saw Liz Kollar who's also from the LA Tri Club. She's a legend in the club. I rode some training rides with her the first of the year with the TriChicks. She's pleasant, helpful and freakishly strong! She rides up montser hills then comes down and rides up with you. She's done 6 Ironmans and was accepted to Kona again for this years Hawaii. Apparently she recently had a birthday which bumped her into my age group... bummer!
We started talking and she told me that just after she received notification of Kona, she tried to grab a bike that was falling after one of the trichicks rides and tore her rotator cuff. She recently had surgery and was swimming with one arm... ONE ARM!!!! Unbelievable! She toasted the entire group swimming with one friggin' arm!!! Swimming is my slowest event and she beat me by 4 minutes... with one (1) arm. One. Impressive.

Even though my swim time was relatively slow, I felt strong and relaxed. I read the currents well except for rounding the last buoy. It carried me a little too north and I had to swim back south. I did have the second fastest bike time in my age group (guess who had fastest? ... Miss One Arm Swimmer! She was probably biking with one leg) and the 5th fastest run time. All which added up to me placing 5th in my age group and the last person to make the podium! Final time: 2 hours and 1 minute AND I beat Ms. Lopez by 22 minutes... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED X2. In defense of J-Lo, she had a respectable time. I admire her for taking it on and she contibuted to raising one million dollars for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles- a very good cause.

So here's the only pictures I have of me. VERY SCARY! They were taken by a LA Tri Club member and posted on the website. Ain't I serious lookin'? Almost as serious (scary?) as GK looks with that beard and dark glasses only I have my Bono Wannabe glasses on. I don't know who is scarier but I'm placing the vote squarely in my corner. GK?

Jeffrey's 15th Birthday Party at Jeff and Michele's

Marathon blogging is about to commence!  I've been gone on vacation (keep scrolling down) and have some catching up to do.

Isn't this a good looking family?  We celebrated Jeffrey's 15th birthday a day late at Jeff and Michele's.  Becky is in from PA.  Mom and I, Gordon, Cherry and Kyle came up as well as some family friends. (Gordon and clan left before I remembered that I brought my camera).

Jacob and Sara surprised us by coming down for a long weekend.  It was so nice to have them here.  2 more months to go for Sara!

This is Rachel Miller (on left) and her family (I can't remember her current last name).  My siblings will remember Rachel- she was the 3rd of 14 (yes, that's FOURTEEN) born to Nancy and Dallas Miller.   Her oldest brother was Rees Miller, whom I taught as a Sunbeam in Sunday School.  That was years before I taught Jeremy Risser and Johnny Thompson as Sunbeams (you do the math!).  Rees died in a car accident in January 1990.
Rachel was on the pioneer trek with Jeffrey and was taken aback by how much he looked like the grown up Rees.  When Michele told me this I had a hard time seeing the similarity based on the little boy I knew.  Michele invited them to Jeff's party and Rachel brought a book that her sister Wendy made of Rees for her parents.  I looked at it and was surprised to see that Jeffrey and Rees did in fact have a somewhat strong physical similarity!  Could have been brothers!  It was fun seeing Rachel as a grown woman with children of her own and seeing what a lovely strong woman she's  become.

Catching Up

Took this from Grandma's bulletin board. A family photo taken in 1991. I'm assuming Toni was pregnant with Michael Grant.

Paul and Anita Coming to Visit

I borrowed this pictures that Paul sent to Grandma of little Charlotte. He called this weekend and he, Anita and baby Charlotte will be coming to town next week. I'm looking forward to meeting Charlotte AND Anita whom I've never met! How did that happen?

What Sydney Did on Her Vacation to Telluride, CO.

Enjoyed the view from our room and laid around on the balcony.  Also had a near encounter with a bear on a trail run.

Bouldered... well, psuedo-Sydney did!
Took a 4wheel drive trip to Imogene Pass (over 13,000 feet) to see the abandoned mines of Telluride including Tomboy and Shamrock mines.

Mountain biked!  This was exciting for me.  The first part was a mostly downhill 17 mile ride.  At the end a trio told the guides they were going to ride back into town.  They let me follow them and we did an hour on a single track that was slightly more technical.  Had some scary moments for me but I had a big grin on my face despite almost doing an endo.

Ate, ate, ate than ate some more...
Attended a concert by the Australian band, The Waifs.
