Beyond The NName GGame...

I must tell you all that I was absolutely entertained with the comments from my last blog entry of What's in a Nname. If you haven't read them, I encourage you to check them out. But Nena Grace's comment about Toni's mispronunciation of "route" got me thinking about other mispronunciations or confused phrasing that has some historical lore in this family (i.e. waRshing machine... and you know who you are!). So for your reading pleasure, here is a sampling of the verbal confusion that has permeated our clan.
Toni: chest-of-drawers = Chester drawers
open = oMpen
manila envelope = vanilla envelope
April: Heard it through the grapevine (sing it loud, sing it proud) = Pray to the Grape God (what does that mean?)
Helms Bakery = Hells Bakery
coffee = copy (as in "cup of copy")
Sydney: lavatory = laboratory. This confusion of words was made to my second grade teacher, Mrs. Robinson. She began to laugh and I immediately wet my pants. I was so shy as a kid, that by the time I had worked up enough courage to ask her if I could use the bathroom (but always being a proper child, tried to use the big word for it) I REALLY had to use it- no time for laughing! Needless to say I was mortified and scarred for life... and I NEVER use the word, "lavatory" when I need one.

Now, lest you think the rest of my dear siblings are linguistic giants, think again! I KNOW we've all had some gems but none are coming to mind so I look forward to exposures made in the comments. Any you nephews and nieces or spouses of, feel free to add some of your own as well.

You ever hear my mom say orchestra? It's like a child when I ask her to say it for me five more times so I can just giggle about it.
She says root, as in root beer, rut.
Perhaps all the Risser woman cannot say root or route???

I know I have to think really hard when I say pin or pen. and Daniel is always asking "what's going off" rather then "what's going on" he blames it on being raised in the south.

It is pretty funny watching Aimee getting mom to say orchestra, I will have to admit. We still love you mom.

Hey Jen, I think the pen vs pin thing is definitely a family thing. I also need to focus when I say "pillow" - I'm inclined to say "pellow"... my patients wonder what I'm talking about!

I just realized that I say "pellow" as well at least I'm not alone.

I'm a pellow lover as well? Chris used to make fun of me but I think he says it now too :)

How about Gerarge for garage?

Sydney January 13, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Who says 'gerarge'? Is it the same person who says "warsh" for wash?

One time when ben was baby sitting us we were eating dinner and i tried to be tricky and pointed out the window and said, "Mom and Dad are home!" When they all looked i thought i was all bad and said, "Major look! Hahaha!" When they all looked at me and chuckled asking what i said, i began to feel sheepish. When i repeated it they all began laughing at me. Apparently it was "Made ya look!" Who knew.

Syd,

Yes, it's Cherryl.

Sydney January 16, 2008 at 11:04 PM

I didn't realize Cherryl said "warsh"... Mom says it too. In fact on the phone tonight, Mom told me she had just "warshed her hair". Tempted to point it out- smiled to myself instead.

I was thinking it was Grandma too. Dad always has to point out the way she says wash.
